Species Name: Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger)

Origin: Eastern and Southern Africa

Typical Weight: 330 to 600 pounds

Horn Size: Trophy horn size of Sable bulls run from 34“ to 55” although the average Sable trophy bull is about 34” to 40

Hunting Season: Year-round

Unique Attributes: 

  1. Distinctive Horns: The most notable feature of the Sable Antelope is its distinctive, backward-curving horns that can extend up to 65 inches (165 cm) in length.

  2. Striking Coat Patterns: Adult males, known as bulls, typically exhibit a glossy black coat, while females, or cows, have a lighter brown coloration.  Both genders showcase contrasting white facial markings, including facial stripes and markings on the underparts.

  3. Agility: Sable Antelopes are agile and capable of reaching high speeds, making them well-adapted to their natural grassland and savanna habitats.

  4. Habitat: Native to the grasslands and savannas of southern Africa, Sable Antelopes prefer regions with a mix of open plains and woodlands.

  5. Behavior: Sable Antelopes often form small herds led by a dominant male, while young males may form bachelor groups.

  6. Mating Season: The mating season for Sable Antelopes often takes place between the months of May and August
